Decorating a house to make it into a home can come at a great expense. When you invest in silk flowers and candles to decorate the home for each changing season and holiday, the collection can quickly outgrow your closet. Below, you'll find some tips to help prepare and move your silk flowers and candles into a storage unit to ensure they remain in good condition for several more seasons.

Prepare the Flowers

Silk flowers should never be stored with any dust or dirt on them. So, before you pack them up to store them, they must be cleaned.

If the flowers are relatively clean, take them outside and use a feather duster to knock the remaining dust off of them. Another thing that works is using compressed air. If you have an air compressor, you can use it—just be sure it's blowing clean air before you blow it onto the flowers.

If you don't have an air compressor, canned compressed air can be picked up at your local department store. When using canned compressed air, be sure to hold the can upright so that it doesn't spit moisture all over the flowers.

Pack the Flowers

For optimum protection, it's best to find boxes to fit each flower arrangement individually. This way, when you're ready to display them, you won't have to spend a whole lot of time working with them to straighten out the stems and arrange the flowers.

Wrap each arrangement in acid-free tissue paper. This paper will protect help protect the flowers from dust without pressing on the arrangement.

Find a larger box that you can use to place all of the smaller boxes inside. Label the large box with the contents and you're ready to take it to storage.

Prep and Pack the Candles

Candles are fairly easy to pack up and store. There are three things that you'll need to do—wipe the dust off of them, snip the burnt wicks off, and wrap each one individually with paper or tissue paper. Just don't use newspaper or the print will transfer onto them.

Now take everything to a climate-controlled storage unit. Store the boxes off of the ground, starting with the heaviest boxes first. Organize the unit in a way that you'll easily be able to find the arrangements that you need for the next season.

Hopefully, the tips above will help to keep your silk flowers and candles in good condition so you won't have to even think about replacing them for several more years. Reach out to a self-storage company for more information.
