How To Choose The Right Storage Facility

Posted on: 19 September 2018

Many people rent storage units to house items they cannot no longer store at home. While there are many storage facilities from which to choose, however, they are not all equal. By placing your items in a storage unit, you are letting the facility keep your items safe for you. For this reason, you must ensure the storage facility is a right fit for you. Check out these three tips to help you chose the right storage facility.

Determine Why You Need the Storage Unit

Storing some of your belongings away from home is a hassle, but you can make it easier by choosing the right type of storage unit for you, and you can do this by determining why you want one. If you need to store the old car you're restoring, you'll likely want a larger, ground unit. However, if you are storing your holiday decorations, a smaller unit on an upper floor works well. Another option is portable storage. With portable storage, the unit is delivered to your home, which you fill at your leisure. It is then sent to the facility for storage. If you need the items again, however, you'll need to request the storage unit, which takes time, making it a poor choice for items you want to access frequently. However, it may be the right choice if you need a storage unit while you relocate.

Choose a Facility With Good Security Measures

Once you know the type of unit you need, start looking at facilities. With most storage units, you'll install your own padlock, so only you can access the items. However, for added security, you want a storage facility with a fence and locked gate. If possible, consider an indoor facility, protected by a fence and gate. Ideally, the lock on the gate should have a pin number, but everyone should be given a different pin number. There should not be a universal pin. A secure storage facility also has plenty of lighting, and it is best to choose one with a manager on-site and/or security guard.

Consider Additional Features

You may need additional features for your storage unit, such as temperature control. Storage units can become hot (especially those on upper floors) in the summer and cold in the winter. If you are storing certain items like photos, electronics, etc. extreme heat or cold can damage the items. Temperature controlled units maintain a comfortable temperature for most items, so they stay safe.

If you have too many items to store at home or you are thinking about relocating and need additional storage, a great storage unit is an excellent choice. If you choose the right one, your items remain safe and sound while you relax at home. For more information regarding storage units, contact a facility such as National Self Storage - Denver.
