Have Fragile Items Going Into Storage? Follow These Tips
Posted on: 11 June 2018
Do you have fine china, glass items, or important paper items going into self-storage? If so, chances are that you want to take them out again someday, so you'll need to know how to properly pack everything, so it stays in good shape. Here are a few helpful tips for packing those fragile items into storage.
Use Bubble Wrap
Any items with glass in it, such as lamps, picture frames, or mirrors, should be wrapped using bubble wrap. This will help prevent the glass from coming in contact with another item, which may cause the glass to shatter. It will help to wrap glass items with a couple of layers of bubble wrap to give it extra padding. Tape the final end of the bubble wrap to the item with tape to keep the padding wrapped tightly around it.
Pad Boxes
When putting fragile items into boxes, it will help to pad the box along the bottom. This can be done with Styrofoam peanuts, old towels, or more bubble wrap. The goal is to give the items inside some additional cushion if the box were to be put down roughly or bumped along the way to your storage unit.
Fill Gaps
It is also important that items do not move around within the boxes once they are packed inside. You should be filling in the gaps with soft items, like packing paper, newspaper, or bubble wrap. The space above the item should be filled as well, so there is no gap between the lid of the box and what is inside. This helps prevent the box from collapsing due to the weight on top of it.
Buy Specialty Boxes
Some items have specialty boxes you can buy to help keep them safe while in storage, so check your local moving supplies store. For instance, there are boxes designed to protect dishes and glasses, artwork, televisions, and lamps. It may cost more to buy a specialty box for them, but it is the best way to ensure that they are protected.
Label Boxes
Make sure every box with fragile items inside is marked with "fragile" on it in letters that are big and bold. You'll likely forget where the fragile items are when you revisit your storage unit, so labeling the boxes will help you remember which ones to be careful with.
With these tips in mind, your fragile items will be sure to survive moving to and from your storage unit. For more information, contact a company like Stadium Storage.
